Have you heard of Changing Places Toilets?

For readers who have not, let’s introduce you to what Changing Places Toilets are and how they stand out from standard accessible toilets.

Imagine you are out and about enjoying your day when you suddenly realise you need to use the toilet. For most people, this is as simple as finding a toilet and then going about the rest of your day. However, if you are one of the 250,000 people in the UK needing assistance to use the toilet, change a continence pad or get changed if you have an accident, this becomes far more difficult.

Standard accessible toilets are often small and lack the necessary facilities and equipment, to allow someone to get changed. Picture having to lay on the floor of a dirty public toilet, while your carer kneels in a cramped space to help you get changed. Or maybe you would have to wait until you go home, which would also mean cutting your trip short.

How would you feel?

Respected? Empowered? Dignified?

No.

Changing Places Toilets – What’s Different?

Changing Places Toilets help to end this unhygienic, undignified reality by offering a larger space with changing benches, hoists, showers, and other facilities and equipment. With these toilets, disabled people needing assistance have a clean, safe, private space to use the toilet and get changed. This opens up a world of possibilities for getting out and about and enjoying the local surroundings.

Whilst progress has been made in increasing the number of Changing Places Toilets in the UK, a large number are still not readily available.

This can mean it takes a little research in order to plan a day out.

Where can you find changing places toilets in Milton Keynes?

ASDA’s Changing Places Toilet is one of the first toilets you will come to before you reach the men’s, ladies’, accessible toilet and baby changing facilities. It is located near the main entrance of the store, not far from the food court area.

IKEA’s Changing Places Toilet is a bit of a tricky one, as it is in a completely different location to all of the other toilets. It can be found further through the store, in the corner of the Rugs section.

The Changing Places Toilet at Willen Lake can be found near the Water Sports Centre & Bar & Kitchen. It’s open until 8pm but you need to speak to someone in reception at the centre (or another member of staff) for access.

These are three of the toilets that we have personally visited, to make this blog post possible. Other Changing Places Toilets in Milton Keynes can be found at:
